WHAT IS ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY?
Individuals in advanced technology and manufacturing careers in Virginia can go from working in labs developing life-saving medicine to making “green” energy.
Advanced technology and manufacturing careers are those that meet the cutting-edge requirements of existing and emerging employers in the realm of manufacturing and biotechnology.
Some of these careers include production specialists, production technicians, chemical equipment operators, machinists, electrical technicians, and stationary engineers as well as drug experience coordinators, environmental health and safety specialists, media prep technicians, pharmaceutical sales reps, product development engineers, quality control engineers, research scientists, technical writers and veterinary scientists.
These careers offer above average pay, the ability for advancement and provide a quality of life and skills that can be transferred across multiple industries.

However, this higher standard is not meant to intimidate anyone who is interested. In fact, through the Virginia Council on Advanced Technology Skills (VCATS), we are making it easier for all motivated individuals to land the career of their dreams.

Twenty three percent of current workers in advanced technology and manufacturing careers may retire by the end of 2010.
In addition, we also have growing industries in biotechnology, energy and IT.
In fact, there are a total of 19 industries that comprise the advanced technology and manufacturing sector.
