Kurt Solland

Industrial Designer, Harman Multimedia

What Kurt does all day.

Basically, he designs computer speakers. But not your run-of-the-mill grey boxes. Take a look at the cutting edge creations Kurt gets paid to invent. He starts with sketches, then moves on to 3D computer modeling before sculpting his futuristic designs in foam. After that, it's on to production and into stores around the world.

Kurt, what's the best part of your job?

"The best part of my job is the design development process. It is kind of like a scavenge hunt to figure out how to make something work." He added, "and it doesn't really seem like work."

Growing up, Kurt's passions spanned the gamut.

He started out in machining and combined that with his love for sculpture. Those two passions have Industrial Designer written all over them. To top it off, he added in a final passion - music. Just like that, he found a great career in manufacturing. "What I am most passionate about is the design ideation. At the beginning stage you have no idea how it will turn out, and when the inspiration materializes it's like a getting a surprise."

Who would you recommend this kind of career to? "

If you dreamed of inventions and loved to tinker while you were a kid, Industrial Design is for you."

So what kind of background do you need?

"Prepare yourself in high school to go to a good university and get a degree in Industrial Design."

The best part of the job?

"When [one of my speakers] comes out in the store. People take it out and it's all perfect! it's really cool to see."
