= John Engler Talking Points Dream It, Do It roll-out Lincoln, Nebraska
September 8, 2006
Thank you, Governor. Im John Engler, president and CEO of the National Association of Manufacturers, the largest industrial association in the country, and a proud participant in the Dream Do, Do It campaign. This is an exciting day to be in Nebraska, and one which demonstrates strong leadership and collaboration from across the state. Leaders in government, manufacturing and education are working together to ensure a bright future for Nebraskas youths and the states economy. Let me start by playing a short video to let everyone see Dream It, Do It in action. [VIDEO] A healthy manufacturing economy is essential for a strong America, period. Manufacturing is the largest sector of the economy, producing $1.5 trillion last year. And manufacturing pays an average of 23 percent more than other industries. So manufacturing can be a great career choice with real prospects. But as you saw in the video, manufacturers are struggling to find skilled talent. And young people are overlooking opportunities. The NAM surveyed our members, and 80 percent reported difficulties in hiring qualified employees for the high-tech workplace. Demographic trends are making it even harder. Many industries are facing the retirements of long-time employees who learned their technical skills on the job over decades. But in the fierce world of global competition, businesses dont have the luxury of decades. They need employees who can step right in, adapt and succeed. So Dream It, Do It is our grassroots solution to excite young people, their parents and educators about careers in modern manufacturing. It helps align the modern business world with the world of education. And Dream It, Do It, helps students gain the tools to succeed in the growing technical and scientific demands of the workplace. Dream It, Do It has already made a positive difference in the Kansas City area, where we launched a pilot project in 2005. A grassroots alliance formed to promote the benefits of manufacturing in the region and to foster an educated and highly skilled workforce. The alliance helped the region acquire a $15 million federal workforce development grant. And the work is paying off. The Kansas City Metropolitan Community College Business and Technology Campus has experienced a 35 percent increase in enrollment in manufacturing-related courses. More young people know about opportunities in manufacturing. And people are paying attention. Im convinced that communities that cooperate like this manufacturers, educators, parents and students, everyone will become even more attractive places to live and work. Today were seeing that kind of commitment and cooperation take the spotlight, right here in Nebraska. And its impressive. And Im tremendously pleased to represent the NAM in helping to announce first state Dream It, Do It campaign. These Nebraskans here are truly pioneers, launching the first state program in the country. I especially want to thank Tony Raimondo for bringing the Dream It, Do It campaign to the state. I am confident Nebraska will serve as a success story to inspire others to Dream It, and Do It. Tony? |
